Spain experienced the hottest and least rainy April since 1961, according to data from the National Meteorological Agency (AEMET) released on Monday.

According to AEMET’s monthly weather report, the average temperature across the country was 14.9 degrees Celsius (ºC), 3 degrees above normal, and just 22% of the precipitation normal values ​​for the reference period 1991-2020 have been collected.

It was the hottest April since records began in 1961, or 62 years, as it was 0.1 degrees Celsius (ºC) above the average maximum temperature for a month of April, which was reached in 2011.

Specifically, the maximum temperatures were on average 4.7 ºC above normal, while the average minimum temperature was 1.3 ºC above average, so that the daily variation in temperature was 3.4 ºC higher than normal.

Regarding rainfall, the climatological report concludes that the month of April was extremely dry, since only 14.2 liters per square meter were collected in the whole country, which is only 22% of the normal for the fourth month of the year.
