This morning (the 5th), the temperature in Hokkaido dropped mainly in inland areas due to the strengthening of the radiation cooling phenomenon, and 120 of the 174 AMeDAS locations where temperatures are monitored recorded the lowest temperatures of the season. For this reason, we observed the first frost and first ice in Abashiri and Hakodate, and the first ice in Asahikawa. Also, in Sapporo, we observed yellow leaves on ginkgo trees.

The coldest weather this season

This morning, the area around Hokkaido was covered with high pressure, and the sky was clear and the wind was generally weak and calm. As a result, the radiation cooling phenomenon became stronger, and in many places the temperature dropped significantly in the morning.

The lowest temperature by 9 a.m. was around 3 degrees Celsius along the coast, and around 0 degrees Celsius widely inland, generally regarding 3 degrees lower than normal. Some places, such as Tomakomai in the Iburi region, experienced temperatures below 0°C for the first time this season, including -0.8°C, and of the 174 AMeDAS locations in Hokkaido, 120 locations recorded the lowest temperatures of the season. In Rikubetsu in the Tokachi region, the lowest temperature in Hokkaido was -5.1℃, the first time this season the temperature has fallen below -5℃.

Even in Sapporo, the temperature was this season’s lowest at 2.6℃, as cold as mid-November, and we observed ginkgo leaves turning yellow one day later than normal and one day later than last year.

First frost and first ice observed

In Hakodate, this was the 5th latest first frost since statistics began. This was the second-latest first ice in Asahikawa since statistics began.
