Record-Breaking Austrian Domestic Tourism: Rising Overnight Stays and Arrival Numbers

Domestic tourism is on the rise. Austrian accommodation companies reported 12.24 million overnight stays in September this year, which was 5.0 percent more than in the same month last year.

This means that the highest September value ever recorded was reached; similar results were last seen in the 1990s, Statistics Austria announced today.

The entire summer season so far (May to September) has also gone well. Domestic accommodation providers recorded 72.30 million overnight stays, 3.9 percent more than in the same period last year (69.54 million).

The number of overnight stays by foreign guests climbed by 6.7 percent to 51.42 million, while domestic guests stayed 2.3 percent less often (20.87 million). Compared to the pre-CoV level, this summer season brought 2.6 percent more overnight stays.

The number of arrivals in the summer season so far was 22.7 million, 7.6 percent above the same period last year and 1.2 percent above the previous record in the pre-CoV year 2019 (22.43 million euros ). From January to September, overnight stays also rose by 11.6 percent to 125.95 million, only 0.6 percent below the comparable period in 2019 (126.73 million).
