In the Black Sea countries of Romania and Bulgaria, record heat, unusual for autumn, made for bathing weather at the weekend. In the Romanian Danube town of Turnu Magurele on the border with Bulgaria, maximum temperatures of 35.1 degrees prevailed in the shade on Saturday. This is the highest value for October 21st since there have been official measurements in Romania, Romanian media reported on Sunday, citing the Meteorological Institute in Bucharest.
“The water is very warm, warmer than in August, around 20 to 21 degrees,” the newspaper “Libertatea” quoted a tourist on the Black Sea, where the air temperature was up to 31.8 degrees.
It was also midsummer in neighboring Bulgaria: in the Black Sea city of Varna, temperatures climbed to 33.4 degrees on Saturday. This broke a 33-year record, as state television reported on Saturday evening, citing the Bulgarian Meteorological Institute. In bright sunshine, many people were drawn to the beach in the tourist hotspot. The highest water temperature on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast was measured a little further south near Burgas at 21 degrees. The previous heat record in Varna was 24.6 degrees on October 21, 1990.
