It is a wealth of our territory that we share with our French neighbors: the slag heaps. Today there are 500 remaining on both sides of the border, some of which are listed as UNESCO world heritage sites. And sometimes, whether in France or Belgium, they experience a great reconversion.

In Pas-de-Calais, in Noeux-les-Mines, for example, a slag heap now accommodates a synthetic ski slope. “People did not know about alpine skiing, this helped to democratize this activity“, explains Yannick Lada, manager of the Loisinord ski stadium. The 300 meters of slope welcome 20,000 skiers per year. The site will further evolve: new buildings will host virtual activities around the theme of skiing, to welcome visitors during in summer, when the track is closed.

In Belgium, in Monceau-sur-Sambre, the Martinet slag heap is beginning to transform. There are still some vestiges left, such as the old hanged man’s room, currently transformed into a brewery. A new tavern will soon see the light of day there. The slag heap is part of the Black Loop, a 23 km walk around Charleroi, which allows you to discover the city’s industrial past.
