More than one in two French people go on vacation at least once during the year, sometimes for distant destinations. As every year, the High Council for Public Health (HCSP) has just published its recommendations for travellers. Presentation of the novelties of this year 2023.

Travel and health recommendations

This document contains 171 pages and is intended for all health professionals who advise and support travellers. In the event of a travel plan, it is therefore advisable to talk regarding it sufficiently in advance (several weeks or several months depending on the case) with your doctor to make update on vaccinations and define the emergency kit to take for vacation or stay. It is impossible to generalize and recommendations must therefore be adapted to each situation.

As for vaccinations, vaccination recommendations are defined according to the country of destination, the duration and the conditions of the stay. Please note that certain vaccinations such as yellow fever must be carried out in a vaccination centre. Some vaccinations are compulsory to enter certain countries, while others are simply recommended. For vaccination once morest Covid-19, the epidemiological evolution leads to sometimes rapid changes in health recommendations for international travellers. To find out regarding the situation and the recommendations in the country of destination, consult the website of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs in the “travel advice” section.

Vaccinations and prophylaxis once morest malaria

The latest HCSP recommendations provide an updated list of countries where vaccination recommendations are changing for yellow fever, leptospirosis, poliomyelitis and even tuberculosis. In any case, going on a trip can be an opportunity to review your vaccinations and protect yourself once morest certain serious infectious diseases through vaccination. You just have to do it early enough to be vaccinated in time before departure.

One of the main diseases to be protected once morest when traveling to certain regions of the world is undoubtedly malaria. The global situation has remained stable since 2015, and some countries are progressing towards elimination of the disease. Currently, 96% of cases and deaths occur in sub-Saharan African countries. Prevention once morest malaria is essential but it must be adapted (the antimalarials prescribed are not the same depending on the country of destination and the length of stay) and respected (it is often necessary to start the treatment before departure and continue it following the return). Not to mention the protection once morest mosquitoes (mosquito net, clothing and insecticide products), because malaria is not the only vector-borne disease transmitted by mosquitoes. It should also be remembered that malaria can lead to death, especially in the event of late diagnosis.

Turista, air pollution, … get information to protect yourself

Usually less serious, turista or traveler’s diarrhea can nevertheless spoil part of the stay. Hygiene measures are essential to prevent it, especially with regard to water. The first-line treatment is an antibiotic, azithromycin, for dysenteric syndromes or serious non-dysenteric diarrhea during a stay in Asia. Gastrointestinal disturbances can also occur several days or several weeks following returning from travel. They can be the sign parasite infestation and the context of the trip must be reported to the doctor to facilitate the diagnosis.

Now, problems related to atmospheric pollution are included in the traveler’s recommendations, as pollution can be severe in certain regions of the world, with significant effects on health, particularly for vulnerable people (children, pregnant women, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses). Finally, the recommendations specify the content of the aid kit to take with you, in particular the procedures for the advance prescription of antibiotics for certain specific situations. Before leaving on a trip, especially if it is long and far, remember to consult your doctor to find out the recommendations and go on a trip without jeopardizing your health.
