The European Parliament’s special committee on the lessons to be learned from the Covid-19 pandemic adopted its final report on Monday evening in Strasbourg. In particular, it recommends keeping schools open in the event of new pandemics.

To achieve this, additional investment is needed, both in good teaching infrastructure and in staff, or digitalization“, underlined the president of this commission, the Belgian MEP Kathleen Van Brempt (S&D, Vooruit).

Established a little over a year ago, the commission “Covid“calls on the European Commission and Member States to invest more structurally in care facilities.”We must invest in emergency capacities. More staff around the beds are needed, and the working conditions of health care staff need to be improved“, insisted Mme Van Brempt.

Joint vaccine purchases and the European vaccination strategy are described as a success, although the report notes the lack of transparency on vaccine contracts and negotiations with manufacturers. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has long been the target of criticism over negotiations with Pfizer boss Albert Bourla, whose association with German lab BioNTech secured the largest deliveries.

Albert Bourla twice refused to appear before the parliamentary committee, while no agreement was reached on a hearing of the German, which the European People’s Party (EPP) would have prevented.

The report also calls on the Commission to support the emergence of an international treaty on pandemic prevention and response.
