Recognize the tiger mosquito from other species
As many species of mosquitoes co-exist, they can sometimes be confused.
Some clues to properly recognize the tiger mosquito:
- Very small but lively: it is smaller than a 1 euro cent coin, less than 0.5 centimeters! It is fast and its sting can be painful. It is an “urban” mosquito that lives near homes.
- Black and white striped: the tiger mosquito is black striped with white (not yellow!), all over the body and legs. It is also characterized by the presence of a white line along its thorax.
- Silent, it stings the day: Unlike the common mosquito which spends the night biting you and whose noisy flight prevents you from sleeping a wink, the tiger mosquito is rather silent. It stings during the day (especially in the morning and late followingnoon).
His places of life
The tiger mosquito develops mainly in urban and peri-urban areas, near homes in town and in the countryside, in towns, districts, housing estates, etc.
Its anthropophilic character (which likes places inhabited by man) explains that once installed in a municipality or a department, it is practically impossible to get rid of them.
It moves little during its life (150 meters around its birthplace) and “uses” road and rail transport to spread.
The female lays her eggs on the dry walls of small containers of any shape.
Once full of water, the eggs develop in regarding 1 week, which explains the rapid spread of this mosquito.
