Strong leaders of their respective countries, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Viktor Orban meet this Monday, December 18 in Budapest. The date corresponds almost to the centenary of the Magyar-Turkish friendship treaty (December 15, 1923). Behind this anniversary, Orban receives Erdogan a few days following a historic European summit. The EU’s Magyar troublemaker was unable to prevent the opening of accession negotiations with Ukraine, but nevertheless opposed 50 billion euros in aid for kyiv.
Erdogan comes to Hungary for the second time in 2023. On August 20, he discussed energy, trade and security with Orban, attended the athletics world championships with a gathering of authoritarian leaders from the Balkans and Central Asia, then admired the fire of National Day fireworks from the heights of Buda.
