Shots were fired once more during the night from Saturday to Sunday in the Brussels municipality of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean. This is the third such incident in three days. A chase which led the police to Vilvoorde where two people were arrested took place shortly followingwards, but it is currently unknown whether there is a link between the two incidents. The information, reported by several media, was confirmed Monday evening by the Brussels prosecutor’s office.
The shots were fired on Saturday evening around 10 p.m. in the area of rue de l’Ecole in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean when local residents heard several detonations. It is also unknown whether the incident caused any casualties.
Shortly followingwards, the Brussels West police (Jette/Ganshoren/Koekelberg/Molenbeek-Saint-Jean/Berchem-Sainte-Agathe) chased a suspicious Peugeot 508. The chase ended in Vilvoorde, where the two occupants of the vehicle were arrested. On the road taken by the fleeing vehicle, the police also found a firearm, which undoubtedly belonged to one of the two occupants, but it is still unclear whether there is a link between the gunshots and the car chase.
“At this stage of the investigation, the Brussels public prosecutor’s office cannot establish a link between the gunshots heard in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean on Saturday evening and the chase that followed,” explained the spokesperson for the public prosecutor’s office. from Brussels, Yasmina Vanoverschelde. “At the end of this pursuit, two people were arrested and made available to the prosecution. One of them, the alleged passenger of the vehicle, was released following questioning. »
The second suspect, the alleged driver, was brought before the investigating judge for receiving stolen goods, malicious obstruction of traffic and carrying a prohibited weapon. The investigating judge charged him with receiving stolen goods and released him on conditions, the prosecution said.
The incident on Saturday evening is already the third of this type to take place in three days in the Brussels municipality. Shots were fired in the Bonnevie Park area around midnight on the night of Thursday to Friday. One person was injured. The victim was taken to hospital but his life is not in danger.
