The toll is growing. The health authorities announced this Tuesday evening the death of one person from food poisoning while 8 others were hospitalized, including 7 in intensive care, in Gironde and Île-de-France. They all got sick after eating in a restaurant in Bordeaux between September 4 and 10.
According to the Directorate General of Health (DGS), these patients were part of a group of “10 cases clinically suggestive of food botulism”. This “rare but serious neurological condition” develops “in preserved foods that have not undergone an extensive sterilization process: cured meats, cold meats or even preserves of family or artisanal origin”, specified this Tuesday morning the Regional Health Agency (ARS) of Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
“All cases consumed sardines in jars made by the restaurateur,” added the DGS.
A call for vigilance
The authorities also indicated: “The occurrence of other cases, in the coming days, linked to this establishment is not excluded.”
A little earlier today, the ARS stressed that, given the incubation time which can range from a few hours to a few days, health establishments are “called to be extremely vigilant”.
“People who have frequented this Bordeaux establishment are called to be extremely vigilant and to consult in the event of symptoms,” advised the press release.
Analyzes are currently underway by the National Reference Center for Botulism “for biological confirmation of botulism” in the Bordeaux cases.
Fatal in 5 to 10% of cases
This little-known neurological condition can be fatal in 5 to 10% of cases, depending on the World Health OrganizationIt is (WHO), a UN agency. However, mortality is particularly high for people who are not diagnosed early.
Concerning the symptoms, they can manifest themselves “to varying degrees”, recalls the DGS. They may initially be fleeting through abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. It may also involve eye damage, dry mouth accompanied by difficulty swallowing or even speech, or neurological symptoms such as paralysis of certain muscles. Typically, these symptoms are not accompanied by fever.
