It was 9 p.m. last night when the rapid intervention team of the Antwerp Police intercepted a van on this important city boulevard. On board, seven heavily armed men whom the police held at gunpoint for several minutes on the public highway.
“There were three firearms in the vehicle. The seven people are of Dutch nationality. Aged between 22 and 35, they were arrested and are being questioned“, explains Kato Belmans, spokesperson for the Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Yesterday, several tonnes of cocaine hidden in a cargo of soya flour were seized at the Port of Antwerp. Were the individuals arrested responsible for recovering this drug from Sierra Leone in West Africa? This is the lead favored by investigators.
“The suspects’ intentions and where they were going will have to be determined through the investigation. We will also have to determine whether there is a link between these arrests and the large quantities of drugs intercepted in the Port of Antwerp by Customs earlier today.“, continued Kato Belmans.
The Port of Antwerp is considered the main gateway for drugs into Europe. Last year, 110 tonnes of cocaine were seized there by the authorities.
