Recapping the Disastrous Coco-Cola Triangular Series: India’s Pathetic Batting Performance in Sharjah 2000

Coco-Cola Triangular Series involving India – Pakistan – South Africa held in Sharjah in the month of March 2000.. Has anyone seen this tournament..?? A series that saw the most pathetic face of Indian batting!

On one side, the pace trio of Akram, Waqar and Akhtar was the Pak bowling. While Donald on the other hand is relieved that he won’t get caught, De, Makaya Entini with his fiery bowling, Nanty Haywards who trembles with pace in the South African line-up… and Jacques Kallis as the team’s second bowler, who consistently clocks more than 140-145km during his best bowling times.

Every match in the tournament saw the Indian batsmen struggling for every run once morest both the teams. Both times India lost all three matches in the four-match group stage and were eliminated from the tournament. India did not cross 200 in a single match of the tournament. From Sachin, Ganguly, Azhar, Jadeja, Dravid, the Indian batsmen were in a situation where balls might double than runs in every match. Batting mixed with a little caution and fear!

Apart from Azharuddin, who scored a half-century in the match once morest Pakistan, no other Indian batsman scored a single half-century in the tournament. In fact, I really wanted to get that tournament sooner rather than later. I don’t remember seeing such miserable Indian batting in any other tournament.

Months following this tournament with back-to-back defeats in Sharjah, India’s Sharjah tournaments came to an end with a heavy 245-run defeat once morest Sri Lanka, where they reached the final of another tri-series involving Zimbabwe.
