Since the beginning of April, at the mythical “Flots bleus” campsite, life has resumed its rights. At the foot of the Dune du Pilat, this is the first of five campsites to have reopened. Admittedly, only half of the facilities are open, but it is already full.
“We were relatively spared. Next door, my colleagues’ campsite has disappeared at 99%”, testifies its boss Franck Couderc on Wednesday in La Matinale de la RTS.
The obsession in the region is to avoid another catastrophe. At the campsite, Franck Couderc seeks to raise awareness among residents, “because the previous fire outbreak was an accident”.
New landscapes and new nature
Here the landscape has changed, but nature is reappearing, “ferns, greenery, trees are growing back where they burned”, says Franck Couderc, “following the trees 25 or 30 meters high, we will see them grow, but underneath, we will no longer be there”.
In some places, the pine forests are miraculously preserved, while in others, the landscape is tormented. “It’s quite sad, we knew the place all green”, assure the inhabitants of the region, “the decor has changed a lot and it is dark”.
Despite the damage, Olivier Dokhan, owner of the restaurant “Le Petit Nice” is confident: “Sincerely, for the season, I don’t worry, because the customers have returned in droves”. The restorer speaks of new beauty, “it’s very lunar, it’s a new landscape, (…) but whatever happens, people are in love with the area”.
Hybrid species are replanted
According to Angélique Tilleul, deputy mayor in charge of the environment, the current plantations will not be enough, new interventions will still be necessary, “because of climate change and soil warming, pines are finding it increasingly difficult to take over on their own”.
The National Forestry Office therefore opts for a hybridization of species, “with pines which grow a little further south of France, even in the Iberian regions”, explains the elected official.
For 80 years, the region had not seen such a fire. Cap de Buch has become a symbol of resilience in the face of climate change and its dangers.
