A “capernaum”. Pascal Prout thus spoke of his tobacco-pressThe Virginia, three weeks ago. This business, which also does groceries, was looted : hookahs, tobacco cartridges and electronic cigarettes were stolen. The Virginia has reopened Friday July 21. Between the forced gate and the stolen cash register, the manager has at least 9,000 euros in repairs. “We also had to clean the floor with acid. It was covered with grease from the sliders that they had to force to open the gate”. From now on, he and his employees want to get their heads above water: “The clientele was waiting for us to reopen. We knelt down, ok, but that’s not why we stop, we get up”.

Waiting for the expert

The shop lives on his cash pending the arrival of compensation. But the insurance expert has not yet come to assess the damage. He is due August 1st. It’s too long for Pascal Prout: “It’s the holidays, then we will learn regarding this file in September, the time to process it, we are in October… And then following, Christmas arrived! Knowing in addition that the aid will be imposed.”

Yet the National Assembly definitively adopted Thursday, July 20, the bill to facilitate reconstruction work following urban violence. But Pascal Prout does not believe it: “It’s lyrics, it’s going to be hard for a while.”

“Psychologically it’s hard, but you have to bounce back”

Beyond the financial harm, some employees are traumatized by recent events. One of the employees is also on sick leave. Rose, collaborator of Pascal Prout for 20 years has decided to return to work. “I’m stressed. Psychologically it’s hard.” she explains, before recovering:But we have to bounce back. I have already experienced two robberies, they have already waited for me in the parking lot and I have come out of it very well. Young people [NDLR Pour les commerçants, ce sont des jeunes du quartier qui ont commis les pillages] they will come back to the store, but I will look at them face to face.”
