Rebirth at Ground Zero: A New Era Emerges from the Twin Towers’ Ashes

  • Several works have been built in tribute to the victims at the site of the worst tragedy in the United States.

On September 11, 2001, the United States suffered the largest terrorist attack in its history, which caused the death of more than 3,000 people and left 6,000 injured. On that day, two hijacked planes crashed into the Twin Towers in New York and another into the Pentagon, while a fourth aircraft crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

23 years after the attack, this event is still a topic that raises questions and interest in society, especially about what exactly happened that day and what the building complex known as the World Trade Center was like before the tragedy.

The Twin Towers were designed by Minoru Yamasaki and construction began on August 5, 1966. Their location was privileged because they were located in the heart of the Financial District of Manhattan.

The structures were 110 stories tall and ranged in height from 415 to 417 meters. Urban experts believe the two towers completely changed the skyline of New York City and earned them the recognition of being the fourth tallest complex in the world.

The World Trade Center housed 500 companies with more than 500,000 employees and 150,000 visitors a day. Both buildings were also home to an underground subway station and an underground shopping mall, the largest in the city.

Inside the towers there were also several businesses and restaurants, and the South Tower had the World Trade Center Observatory, which was a public area located between floors 107 and 110 that allowed visitors to observe the city.

Likewise, the towers had the most famous restaurant called Windows of the World, which opened in 1976 and was constantly visited by hundreds of people.

The time for tributes.
Tributes are held every September 11 at 8:46 a.m. because that is when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center.

At the exact spot where the towers stood, two descending fountains were built to represent the void left by the attack. The “9/11 Memorial” has plaques with the names of the victims engraved on them. They were inaugurated in 2011, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the attacks.

Next to the fountains is the museum, where photographs, objects recovered from the rubble and parts of the original complex are displayed.

The US authorities permitted the construction of One World Trade Center, formerly known as the Freedom Tower, which was built where the Twin Towers once stood. This building, which became the core of the new WTC complex, was inaugurated in 2014. Today, it is considered the tallest skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere and the seventh tallest in the world.

In addition, Oculus Station, a metro station located just a few metres from the Memorial Museum, was opened in 2016. This station connects 11 metro lines and offers underground access to the main WTC towers. It also has a shopping centre and a wide range of restaurants.

The victims’ families also hold an annual tribute in light, an event in which two large lines of light, made up of 88 7,000-watt spotlights each, are turned on and placed at the site of the Twin Towers.

The purpose of the memorial is to project two powerful beams of light representing the Twin Towers that illuminate the sky throughout the night. This initiative began in 2002, one year after the attacks, and has since become a symbol of memory and hope. Every September 11, the beams of light are visible from several miles away, and serve as a reminder of the impact of the tragedy.
