Expected for December 22 on Netflix, “Rebel Moon” by Zack Snyder is a major project for the platform. The director already makes it known that sequels, in films or in series, are possible.
Netflix is preparing for the arrival of its 2023 blockbuster, Rebel Moon. This ambitious project is co-written and directed by Zack Snyder who, two years following his Army of the Dead, is teaming up once more with the streaming giant.
Carried by a budget of 166 million dollars, the film opens the doors to a universe of great richness which is reminiscent of another intergalactic saga.
Rebel Moon was born from an idea for a film for the Star Wars franchise pitched by Zack Snyder himself. The feature film will be released in two parts – the premiere is expected on December 22.
In an interview with Empire magazine – which devotes its cover to the blockbuster – the director shares his many plans for the sequel to Rebel Moon. He specifies that he knows exactly where to go and that he intends to go beyond the two films planned.
“When I pitched my idea to Netflix, they were expecting big, he explains. They wondered, ‘What might be the scale of this project? How many movies?’ And I was like, ‘Okay, if they really want to go, we can really get to the bottom of it. It is a bottomless pit.”
A 450-PAGE BIBLE AROUND THE FILM
Determined to offer a concrete universe, Zack Snyder has developed a 450-page bible, bringing together all the information and secondary stories. “I have a huge board in my office that brings together all my ideas and if all goes well, a lot of it might end up on the screen.”
The filmmaker says that a TV series project might explore the story of the big villain of the saga, Balisarius. And for a possible third film, viewers might experience the rebellious moon – which lends its name to the film’s title.
“The rebel moon is not the one they are on,” says Zack Snyder. The title is conceptual, but there is a planet named Vanna and it is the rebel planet. She does not even appear for one shot in this film.”
All these ideas are enough to make the greatest science fiction fans dream, but before imagining an extended universe for Rebel Moon, we will have to wait and observe the critical and public reception of the film when it is released.
In the casting, we will find, among others, Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou and Ed Skrein.
