Lintas Melawai is a music, art and culture festival that promotes the cultural heritage of Indonesia in the 80s to the younger generation and the wider community by creating a space for all groups to express themselves in a retro nuance. The initiators of this event are Helmy Yahya, Denny Malik, Donny Rochyadi and Ryzki Hawadi.
“I think Lintas Melawai is a culture. There is music there, there is dance, fashion. There is style, lifestyle I think that is part of culture. We also embrace the younger generation because pop culture, whether it is music, dance, fashion that was hits in that year. Now it is reappearing among today’s youth. Gen Z likes old songs, Fariz RM songs, Utha Likumahuwa songs, Keenan Nasution songs. They like retro songs again, although sometimes the arrangement changes,” said one of the initiators of the Lintas Melawai event, Helmy Yahya, through his statement, Saturday (14/9).
Referring to its history, Lintas Melawai is a term used in the 1980s for the activity of crossing Melawai Plaza, a shopping center located in the Blok M area, South Jakarta. Young people at that time loved to do Lintas Melawai from just hanging out while watching cars passing by or even becoming an event to show off vehicles by going around the Melawai area.
Meanwhile, another initiator of Lintas Melawai, Denny Malik, admitted that the 1980s gave birth to songs, films and fashion that became the forerunner of Indonesian pop culture.
“The most memorable thing for me in the 80s was that all the songs were masterpieces, Indonesian films were booming in the 1980s, then the fashion that became the beginning of pop culture in Indonesia. The 80s became the forerunner so that I was so strong in creating because the influence was very strong,” explained Denny.
