The summary
While the results of French students often remain disappointing and the recruitment of teachers is proving increasingly complex due to a lack of candidates, continuing education must have an important place throughout the professional life of teachers. Gérard Longuet, special rapporteur for the “School education” mission, thus carried out budgetary control work on the continuing training of teachers.
The recurrent criticisms addressed to the system of in-service teacher training stem less from a problem of means than of the quality and management of training. Funding dedicated to continuing education is not well known, for lack of an information system that allows real budgetary traceability.
The continuing education system, historically poorly organized and lacking an overall vision, remains poorly perceived by teachers. Thus, nearly half of French teachers consider that there is no training appropriate to their needs.
Structuring and adaptation efforts can be underlined, without for the time being having made it possible to fully respond to the criticisms. The main challenge now is to make continuing education a real tool for managing the ministry’s human resources. In particular, it is essential to value continuous training in career development and to take into account, in the geographical mobility of teachers, the follow-up of specific training.
