Reasons for not being able to sleep despite sleepiness

1- Anxiety

The inability to sleep despite sleepiness may be due to an anxiety disorder, as it negatively affects the body’s circadian rhythm by stimulating the brain to produce more of the stress hormone cortisol.

2- Depression

A review of a group of studies in 2019 revealed that 90% of people with depression suffer from problems that prevent them from sleeping at night, such as insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea and restless legs syndrome.

3- Caffeine

Doctors advise to stop drinking caffeine-rich drinks, such as coffee, tea and Nescafe, 4 to 6 hours before bedtime, to avoid feeling insomnia.

Research has shown that consuming 16 ounces of brewed coffee – equivalent to 200 milligrams of caffeine – 16 hours before evening falls may have negative effects on sleep.

4- Electronic boards

You should stay away from electronic tablets, especially mobile phones, hours before bedtime, because the blue light emitted from screens disrupts the circadian rhythm and reduces the production of the hormone melatonin.

5- Hormonal disorders

Women are among the groups that suffer most from the inability to sleep despite sleepiness, and the reason is due to the hormonal disorders that they are exposed to before, during the menstrual cycle, and following menopause.

It has been proven that hormonal disorders in women reduce the production of the hormone melatonin, increase stress hormones, cause headaches, and raise body temperature, all of which are factors that cause difficulties in sleeping.
