Les Diaboliques (French: LesDiaboliques‎), is a 1955 French psychological crime thriller film directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot, based on the 1952 novel She Who Was No Longer (Cellequin’étaitplus) by Pierre Bouillot and Thomas Narcezac Starring Simon Signore, Vera Clouzot, Charles Vanel and Paul Morris.

The story combines elements of thriller and horror, with the plot focusing on a woman and her husband’s lover conspiring to murder the man. It was the 10th highest grossing film of the year in France, with a total of 3,674,380 tickets. The film also received the Louis DeLuc Award in 1954.

Clouseau, after running out of Horror (1953), optioned the rights to the screenplay, preventing Alfred Hitchcock from making the film. However, the film helped inspire Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960). Robert Bloch, author of the novel “Psycho”, stated in an interview that his favorite horror film of all time was The Devil Women.

Plot

Two women, wife Cristina (Vera Clouzot) and lover Nicole (Simon Signore), decide to murder the man who has made their lives difficult. Michel (Paul Morris), an obnoxious and domineering man, behaves in such an unacceptable way that his murder seems perfectly justified. The school he owns and runs has a few days off, which the two women take advantage of to implement their plan. He is lured to Nicole’s private residence where he is murdered, drugged and drowned in the bathtub. They return to school with the body and, taking advantage of the holiday, throw it into the pool. But a few days later when the pool is emptied to be cleaned there is no corpse left. At the same time, a student insists that he has seen the headmaster, while the dry cleaners send back, clean and ironed, the suit he wore the night he was murdered. Things get even more complicated when in the commemorative school photo, the murdered man’s face can be seen in the background.

The religious and hysterical Cristina begins to break down and her fragile health falters, while Nicole tries to find some edge by staying cool and smoking constantly.
