The head of the National Defense, Rear Admiral of the Navy, Daniel Muñoz, pointed out regarding the deadly fires in the Valparaíso Region that “there are indications that at the origins of these mega fires, there are patterns of behavior that there was planning, something orchestrated and organized.”
In addition, he maintained that “there have been reports of fires started by unknown persons, but we have not found anything. However, the PDI and the Public Ministry are investigating these cases,” he stated in statements to radio ADN.
Indeed, despite having been arrested as suspects, there has finally been no progress in proving responsibility for the fires.
In this sense, the two suspects arrested on Sunday following being detected wandering around the Botanical Garden, which was completely destroyed by the fire, were not even formalized due to lack of evidence, so they were released.
Curfew
On the other hand, the rear admiral of the Navy confirmed that the night curfew will be maintained. “What I am clear regarding is that we are going to establish night curfews, because at night is where the places where the emergency has occurred are most vulnerable,” he stated.
Likewise, he did not rule out implementing the measure during the day. “I will evaluate the daytime curfew to the extent that I manage to have control of the large access routes to the places where the Carabineros emergencies are,” he stated.
“If I am effective with the Carabineros in managing to block those routes, it will be the lesser evil, and thus I will not have the urgent need to impose a daytime curfew. I am going to evaluate that during the day,” he concluded.
