A new information system making it possible to know the influx of trains in real time, car by car, was set up on Monday on the Transilien network. An important device for the 2024 Olympics.

Full trains, standing journeys… For the first time in France, a new service giving real-time information on train traffic, at the platform and on approach, was deployed on a large scale at the beginning of May on the Transilien network in order to improve passenger comfort. “VSThis service gives an indication of the crowds on board the next trains operated by Transilien SNCF Voyageurs, by car, in real time, on the display screens on the platforms in the station“, Details Île-de-France Mobilités in a press release.
The project, 100% funded by the Île-de-France transport union, had been tested during the pandemic on line H in order to encourage users to respect barrier gestures. Since the spring of 2021, the Île-de-France Mobilités application, the transilien.com site, and the Tilien chatbot have allowed travelers to see the usual crowds of all trains and RER: an innovative initiative, presented under the name of ‘”Hector”. Thanks to its generalization, it is now possible for the lines H, J, K, L, N, R, a large part of the Line P and partially on the RER E to see the crowds in real time of the wagons, directly on the docks.

A color code system
This extensive information system has been installed on all lines with infrared counting sensors, located above the doors: they measure the number of passengers entering and alighting from each car. The calculated filling rate is then sent to display screens present at the dock, integrating a simple color code system. Red, indicating a high level of affluence, warns the traveler that there will be no seats. Orange, with an average level of crowding, indicates that there are few seats available. Green, meanwhile, informs the user that there are enough seats available in the car, to travel comfortably.
In addition to a considerable gain in comfort for passengers, this information system aims to improve the fluidity and punctuality of trains. Thanks to these screens, there is less risk “congestion” in a carriage, and therefore jostling that might delay the departure of the transilien. Finally, Île-de-France mobilities specifies that this device can help people who feel insecure to move towards fuller wagons.
Olympic Games 2024, the transport challenge
The SNCF network will be particularly under strain during the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Several solutions are being put in place to bring the approximately 7 million spectators expected for the event, from July 26 to August 11, such as the installation of additional buses. This information system aims to be generalized to all trains that have infrared counters, representing half of the current fleet, specify Transilien SNCF Voyageurs and Île-de-France mobilities in a press release.
On the eve of the 2024 Olympic Games, improved flow management will allow spectators to travel more peacefully to Paris, the suburbs being recommended for accommodation during the event. Since 2020, Transilien SNCF has been preparing its system for transporting spectators to the 25 sites of the Olympic and Paralympic Games events, in collaboration with Île-de-France Mobilités. RATP and SNCF will have to increase transport traffic by 15% in common in the Paris region: a great opportunity for Transilien to show its skills in the field of Mass-Transit.
