Real-time deepfakes and their impact on privacy – Digital Economy Blog

Recent advances in artificial intelligence have not only led to the development of more sophisticated and intelligent chatbots, but have also brought significant challenges, not least the emergence of deepfakes. While many AI-generated deepfakes are often created after the fact, a new technique goes a step further and enables real-time AI face-swapping during video calls.

The Deep-Live-Cam software project has been in the works since late last year, but video examples of real-time face swaps featuring people resembling Elon Musk and Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance (among others) have gone viral online. The wave of attention briefly propelled the open-source project to the top of GitHub’s list of popular repositories, where it can be downloaded for free.

The Innovation Behind Deep-Live-Cam Technology

The software relies on advanced image processing algorithms that are able to superimpose static faces onto live video. It can replicate not only facial features but also ambient lighting and expressions, making the simulation particularly convincing. The technology, known as “deepfake,” exploded in popularity in 2017 thanks to a Reddit user who swapped a performer’s face with that of a celebrity.

For example, one video shared by a developer realistically merged Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s face onto another person’s. The deepfake video even merged prescription glasses and the subject’s hair, producing an impressively realistic effect. Another example showed the faces of US vice presidential candidate JD Vance and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg.

Potential economic risks

According to a forecast last May, AI-driven fraud could cost the US more than $40 billion per year by 2027, a 32% annual increase, highlighting the significant economic impact the technology could have.

It is worth noting that creating a Deepfake without the consent of the person concerned is illegal and may be subject to severe penalties. Deepfakes have raised concerns about their potential to spread false information and deceive scenarios. Therefore, the use of Deep-Live-Cam and other real-time AI simulation applications raises serious concerns about privacy protection and security. Imagine if a photo of you was stolen from the Internet and used for fraud, deception, or other malicious activities without your permission.
