Manchester City’s equalizer in the giant duel once morest Real Madrid is still making waves on Wednesday. The video referee is badly demonized by the Spaniards.
With a wonderful long-range shot, Kevin de Bruyne made the City fans celebrate the equalizer once morest Real Madrid following 67 minutes. As great as the joy of the English is, the frustration of the Spaniards is just as great. Especially with Carlo Ancelotti. The Real coach, who normally doesn’t get upset that easily, complains so vehemently to the referee that the 63-year-old sees one of his very rare yellow cards.
The reason for Ancelotti’s outburst: Bernardo Silva saved the ball on the sidelines while the equalizer was being scored (around 20 seconds before the goal). While referee Dias lets the game continue, the Real coach sees the ball out of bounds. A 3D analysis by “beIN SPORTS” confirms Ancelotti’s assumption. And the Italian is annoyed at the press conference following the game: “He was outside. I’m not saying that, technology is saying that. I don’t understand why the VAR didn’t check that. The referee didn’t pay attention to a lot of things tonight.”
Wenger doesn’t understand the VAR decision either
The Spanish media echoed the same sentiments on Wednesday. There is talk of a “scandal”, while the VAR once once more has to endure insult and disgrace. «Absolutely criminal that this hit counts. And in such an important game,” writes “El” on Twitter.
The complaints of the Spaniards are understandable. The recordings clearly show that the ball was over the line in formation. Even the former Arsenal coach and current TV expert Arsène Wenger does not understand why the VAR did not intervene: “In situations like this, you have to intervene. They either didn’t go far enough back to check if the ball was out – or they weren’t able to check if the ball was out,” he says in his analysis at beIN SPORTS.
Mistake me if I’m wrong, but I swear VAR was invented to irradiate these sort of mistakes.
Absolutely criminal that the goal is allowed to stand in such a high stakes game. https://t.co/GNQKkkRU6H

Referee Unkel explains the incident
However, the case does not seem that clear. Christina Unkel, referee and rules expert at CBS Sport explains: “According to the VAR protocol, everything went correctly. Between the aforementioned Silva scene, Real Madrid temporarily won the ball and lost it once more. This is a new phase of the game, which is why the video assistant did not have to check the scene on the sidelines. »
That won’t be much of a comfort to Madrid fans, but they have to accept the decision. After all, the chances of reaching the final are still completely intact. The winner of the evening, however, is clearly a meme that is not making the rounds on social media for the first time.
