Real Madrid extended Luka Modric’s contract on Wednesday, allowing the Croatian midfielder to return to the club for his 13th season.

Real Madrid said it had agreed with Modric to extend the player’s contract until June 2025.

One of Madrid’s captains, Modric has not featured as frequently as a starter this season but is expected to play a bigger role in Carlo Ancelotti’s midfield following the retirement of Toni Kroos.

He won 26 trophies for Real Madrid, tied with defender Nacho Fernandez for the most in the club’s history. These include six Champions Leagues and four Spanish leagues.

Real Madrid said: “Modric joined Real Madrid in 2012 and during the 12 seasons he played for us in our shirt, he has become a legend of Real Madrid and world football.”

Modric won the Ballon d’Or, the FIFA Player of the Year award, led Croatia to World Cup runners-up in 2018 and was named UEFA Player of the Year.

Modric has represented Croatia 178 times and is the record holder for the country’s national team. He played 534 times for Real Madrid and scored 39 goals.
