Real Madrid qualified on Wednesday in Riyadh for the final of the Spanish Super Cup by dominating their rival Atlético (5-3) after extra time, at the end of a spectacular match where Antoine Griezmann became the top scorer of the history of his club.

A narrow success for Real Madrid, won at the very end of the game on an unfortunate own goal from Stefan Savic (116th, 4-3), who tried to deprive Joselu of the decisive ball, followed by a fifth goal from Brahim Diaz then that Oblak had left his cages (122nd, 5-3). Real, who won the Copa del Rey last year, will face the winner of the duel between FC Barcelona and Osasuna on Thursday (8 p.m.) in the final to try to win a first trophy this season.

As in the derby last September, Atlético had the best start and surprised the Merengues in the air, Spanish defender Mario Hermoso opening the scoring with a header from a corner perfectly curled by Antoine Griezmann (7th, 1- 0). Eclipsed by the Frenchman in the duel of the providential men, the “pichichi” Jude Bellingham tried to respond from 16 meters but his shot was blocked by Lino (20th).

A first Madrid attempt which led to the equalizer from Antonio Rüdiger’s header (20th, 1-1) receiving Modric’s corner. Ultra effective, as often this season, Real doubled the lead with a subtle recovery from the outside of the left foot of the French side Ferland Mendy (30th, 2-1) on a well-felt cross from Carvajal.

A record Griezmann

Antoine Griezmann then showed his class to equalize and claim his crown as top scorer in Atlético history, behind which he had been running for several weeks. The 2018 world champion dropped Modric with a dribble behind his supporting leg before deceiving Kepa with a cross shot from the right (2-2, 37th), to finally overtake Spanish legend Luis Aragonés with 174 goals under the rojiblanco jersey.

The crazy pace of the match logically dropped in the second half, where Carlo Ancelotti’s men showed themselves to be the most enterprising. It first took two solid saves from Oblak on strikes from Carvajal (70th) and Rodrygo (71st) to prevent the Blancos from regaining the advantage, while Diego Simeone’s team began to falter.

Against the flow of play, Atléti opened the doors to the final, helped by the failed exit of Kepa (78th, 3-2), who deflected the ball into his own goal while trying to box it to the above Morata. A joy cut short by the equalizer from Carvajal (84th, 3-3), who snatched the extension with force from the right into the empty goal, after three saves from the Atlético defense in front of Vinicius and Bellingham.

And the Merengues ended up breaking the Colchoneros at the very end of the second period of overtime with two goals from Savic against his side (116th) and Brahim Diaz (122nd). The two clubs from the Spanish capital will meet in a week’s time in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey, for a new derby full of promise.
