TASS, March 16. Reigning Champions League winners Real Madrid beat last year’s finalists Liverpool 1-0 in the second leg of last year’s tournament, Real Madrid reached the quarter-finals. The meeting ended on Thursday night.
The ball was scored by Karim Benzema in the 79th minute.
In the first match, Real Madrid defeated the opponent with a score of 5:2. Another quarter-finalist was the Italian Napoli, who beat the German Eintracht with a score of 3:0 in the second leg. The Neapolitans also won the first meeting – 2:0.
Real Madrid and Liverpool met for the tenth time in the Champions League, the Spanish club scored six victories, the English two, and two more games ended in a draw. Twice the teams played in the final of the tournament, last year Real Madrid won with a score of 1:0, in 2018 – 3:1. Liverpool beat Real Madrid 1-0 in the European Cup final in 1981. Real Madrid holds the record for the most wins in the Champions League and European Cup, with a total of 14 titles. Liverpool have won six trophies and are tied for third place in this indicator with the German Bayern.
Earlier, English Chelsea and Manchester City, Italian Milan and Inter, German Bayern and Portuguese Benfica reached the quarterfinals of the Champions League. The draw for this stage will take place on March 17, the first legs will take place on April 11 and 12, and the return legs on April 18 and 19. They were the Belgian “Gent”, who defeated the Turkish “Istanbul Basaksehir” with a score of 4:1 in the second leg of the ⅛ final (the first match – 1:1). Gent’s Nigerian striker Gift Orban became the fastest hat-trick in European competition, scoring three goals in 3 minutes and 25 seconds. The 20-year-old striker scored in the 31st, 32nd and 34th minutes.
