“Hope dies”: Muscovites react to news regarding Navalny’s death
Moscow residents reacted on Friday to the news of Alexey Navalny’s death, with some describing it as “fate,” while others said they were “shocked.”
Some Muscovites placed flowers and a photograph of Navalny at a makeshift monument in the Russian capital, according to Reuters images.
Valeria, a 23-year-old tour guide, called Navalny a “symbol” in an interview with Agence France-Presse.
“First of all, a symbol of opposition, a symbol of hope for a better future for Russia. And there is a feeling that with his death, this hope dies. If there was still any hope, now it is even less than it was before,” said.
Vladimir, an 84-year-old former psychologist, called Navalny “just a fundamental element of life for us.”
Moscow-based Alexander told Reuters he thought Navalny’s death was “expected,” adding: “The news said he was kept in bad conditions that were not suitable for living.”
Meanwhile, Moscow native Tatiana said: “Anything can happen in life. Honestly, I think it’s destiny.”
“It’s not political or anything like that. I think… it’s a shame. I am surprised and upset. It’s a shame for the family. He was a young man, he should have lived a long time,” she added.
Another Moscow resident, Mikhail, said he believes that Russia’s enemies should be “dealt with as soon as possible.”
“Glory to our world freedom and our president!” he said.
Navalny supporters: Navalny built a considerable support base during his political career, organizing street protests once morest the government and using his blog and social media to expose alleged corruption in the Kremlin and Russian companies.
