Reactions after deserved derby victory | KRC Genk

The Limburg Derby: Goals, Glory, and a Dash of Drama!

With goals from Tolu, Steuckers, and El Ouahdi, we took the lead in the Limburg derby. I know, it sounds like the beginning of a riddle! What do you call a derby without a bit of goal-scoring drama? A friendly match, and no one shows up for those—much like my last Tinder date!

The first half was a veritable buffet of footballing delight! The Canaries? They were more like canaries in a coal mine—going down horrendously. But as we moved into the second half, it was less “Racing Genk vs. the World” and more “Canaries: Free to Fly (and Fail)”.

Thorsten Fink, our beloved manager, stepped up with his usual grace and charm while handling the post-match questions with the finesse of a juggler trying to impress a crowd of cats. “There is nothing better than winning the derby,” he clapped, glowing with pride. And just when you think he’s on a roll, he added a heartfelt shout-out to the players and fans, “Unfortunately, we conceded two goals.” What an admission! It’s like saying you just bought a new car but forgot to put fuel in it. That’s about as comforting as finding a hair in your soup—thank you for the honesty, Thorsten!

But the real star of the show? Jarne Steuckers! This lad didn’t just score; he made that ball sing! “A derby win gives a good feeling,” he said, and if anyone knows about feeling good, it’s someone who just put one in the back of the net against their old team! Come on, who can resist a bit of friendly rivalry? Like a family reunion that somehow involves a pie-eating contest but ends with everyone disowning each other!

“Especially because we played at home,” he continued, brushing aside a red card like it was a pesky gnat. Scoring against your ex-team? That’s like showing up to your ex’s wedding with a date hotter than they are. Every player should aspire to that level of confidence!

Meanwhile, Matt Smets had his own little love story going on against his former club. “It’s always a thrill to play in such a derby,” he said, evidently riding the emotional rollercoaster of nostalgia and new loyalties. Nothing like the thrill of romantic betrayal on the pitch! “First the selection for the Red Devils,” he mused, “and now this derby victory.” Talk about a week that knocks the socks off the competition! At this rate, the lad should start collecting trophies like Pokémon cards.

He even got credit for assisting Steuckers’ superb goal. He might as well have gotten a medal for that—oh wait, it starts with a “G”: “Glory!” Not a bad week, eh? It sounds like Smets is riding the wave of success, and who could blame him? When life gives you lemons, score goals, bash ex-teams, and pick up a national team selection while you’re at it!

So, the round-up? A brilliant, chaotic derby that left the fans cheering and a flock of Canaries flying home with their tails between their legs. Expect more of this, because as Fink said, “Every game is important in this competition.” Let’s hope they remember that next time we’re on the pitch—because the only goal we should be conceding is the one made from sheer bad aim!

Now, go grab a pint and toast our boys—here’s to more victories, goals, and cheeky comments in future matches! Cheers!

With goals from Tolu, Steuckers and El Ouahdi we took the lead in the Limburg derby. After a strong first half, we kept the Canaries in control during the second period.

Thorsten Fink: “There is nothing better than winning the derby. I am grateful to the players and supporters for their gesture before the match. We had the match well under control, unfortunately we conceded two goals. We played strongly in the first half, but in We forgot to decide the game in the second half. I am satisfied with the game that my team delivered. Certainly Bangoura was strong in the matches and showed his class. We are now in the lead, but we do not focus on that every game is important in this competition.”

Jarne Steuckers beamed after the victory: “A derby win gives a good feeling. We knew it was important to win and we deserved to win. I think we had the upper hand in most moments today, especially because we played at home. Despite the red card it wasn’t always a gift to play against ten men. Scoring against your ex-team is special, and the goal certainly gave me a good feeling. I felt the space and decided to kick towards the short corner The ball flew in nicely. This victory should give us an extra boost to start a winning streak again.”

Matt Smets thought it was special to play against his ex-club. “It’s always a thrill to be able to play in such a derby. It was special to play against my ex-club, but I now wear the Racing Genk logo and I will fight for it.” Smets also played an important role in the goal: “When Jarne is ready with his left hand, you just have to pass the ball, and that worked. He finished well and that gave us hunger for more. I must admit that it was a It was a special week for me. First the selection for the Red Devils, now this derby victory. I look back with satisfaction and take the positive flow with me to the next matches.”
