Loving parenting, emotional support and communication, crucial elements for prevention.
Polydrug use or multiple use of psychoactive substances constitutes a risk phenomenon for the physical and mental health of youth, which can lead to death, said the undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López Gatell-Ramírez.
In the section “Addictions and collective health”, during the morning press conference led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Undersecretary López-Gatell Ramírez argued that polydrug use can occur voluntarily or involuntarily, due to adulteration by a third party or by accidental contamination; The drugs can come in forms such as powder, drops, capsules, tablets, or impregnated paper.
Synthetic or chemical drugs, such as ecstasy, methamphetamine, heroin or LSD, have a much greater impact due to their high addictive capacity and greater intensity of their pharmacological, psychological and neurological effects.
Its non-combined use involves hallucinations, damage to multiple organs, increased heart rate, drowsiness, and states of respiratory depression that can cause death. Mixing two or more significantly raises these risks.
The undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion stressed that drug use is related to mental health, which manifests itself with gaps and emotional problems due to non-acceptance, verbal or physical violent treatment within the family or community.
In this sense, the crucial elements to prevent addictions are loving upbringing, love, closeness, recognition and emotional support towards girls, boys and, above all, youth, since at this stage the person is “extremely sensitive, you have to get to her without violence and with affection”, he stressed.
He pointed out that communication with adolescents in a respectful, open, inclusive and unprejudiced way is essential: “Fathers and mothers of families, we have to make an additional effort to change the cultural and educational model, and understand that we are sowing the seeds of a healthy new generation in all aspects”.
Another preventive element, he added, are the limits of respect, inclusion and awareness; never of violence, repression or violation of the identity or emotional state of girls, boys, adolescents and young people.
López-Gatell Ramírez mentioned parties called rave, organized by companies in suburban and urban areas, which last all night and into the early morning; This is a space for inducing consumption because at times of intense stress, these companies arrive with cocktails of drugs.
He also warned regarding the importance of avoiding the normalization of the narrative that maintains that drug use among young people is something acceptable. In this regard, results from the 2016 National Survey on Alcohol, Tobacco and Drug Consumption (Encondat) show that 11 percent of the friendships of adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 saw substance use as normal; meanwhile, the family represents a containment barrier, because only one percent sees it as acceptable.
The public servant pointed out that the consumption of a non-synthetic psychoactive substance such as marijuana, alcohol and tobacco might lead to other more complex ones, due to the social effect of induction and pressure that normalizes its consumption.
The Encodat 2011 and 2016 indicate that 60 percent of men and women users of high-impact psychoactive substances had a history of marijuana use.
