The hashtag ‘Chalo Lakshadweep’ has spread on social media. But MP Muhammad Faisal commented to the national media that Lakshadweep does not have the strength to support so many tourists.
“Lakshadweep is an ecologically very fragile region. That is why the Justice Ravindran Commission came up with an ‘Integrated Island Management Plan’ for Lakshadweep as per the instructions of the Supreme Court. The infrastructure development of Lakshadweep such as roads and jetties is going on according to this.
In this plan of Ravindran Commission, it has been said how many people the island can accommodate. Accordingly, it is time to impose greater restrictions on tourists on the island. “The plan is to collect maximum income by controlling tourism,” said Mohammad Faisal.
Only 10 of the 36 islands in Lakshadweep are inhabited. Only 8–10 percent of the total population depends on tourism. Lakshadweep was an area that was off the bucket list of many travelers. It is reported that now thousands of inquiries are coming in asking how to reach Lakshadweep, what are the accommodation facilities and what are the sights waiting for.
Lakshadweep Administrator Praful Patel said the other day that the island has enough infrastructure to handle the number of tourists no matter how much it increases. But the increase in the number of tourists will adversely affect the ecological structure of Lakshadweep, says Mohammad Faisal.
