The Baltimore Ravens and quarterback Lamar Jackson failed to reach agreement on a contract extension by the start of the season. The 25-year-old star of the team previously set a corresponding deadline.

Lamar Jackson, whose contract expires at the end of the 2022 season, recently emphasized that he does not want to hold any talks regarding a new contract while the regular season is running and has given today’s Friday as the deadline.
“Despite best efforts on both sides, we were unable to secure a contract extension with Lamar Jackson,” general manager Eric DeCosta said in a statement on Friday. “We really appreciate Lamar’s conduct during the talks.” We will continue to work on a long-term solution following the season.

Jackson, who is one of the few NFL professionals who does not have an advisor and represents himself, will open the new season, which Baltimore will open with the New York Jets around former Ravens Super Bowl winner Joe Flacco on Sunday (7 p.m.). , under the so-called “fifth-year option” of his rookie contract. That gives the hard-running leader of the AFC North team around 23 million US dollars. If both parties don’t come to an agreement by March 7, 2023, the Ravens must “franchise tag” him if the star and franchise face is not to become a free agent. They’re unlikely to let him go without a price.
In any case, the 25-year-old has a big payday ahead of him: this year, three franchise quarterbacks received new contracts, each bringing them more than $165 million in guaranteed salaries. Jackson, of course, runs the risk of losing such a money spree should he sustain a more serious injury this season without extra time.
The Ravens once chose Jackson in the 2018 draft with the last pick of the 1st round. The feared playmaker then led his team to three play-off appearances and was voted league MVP in 2019. Last season, however, Baltimore missed the playoffs as the last in the division – also because Jackson was injured at times.
