Support from fans has been pouring in for Raul Malo, the charismatic frontman of The Mavericks, who has courageously been battling cancer in the public eye, garnering an outpouring of prayers and well-wishes from across the music community.
Despite his ongoing chemotherapy treatments, Malo has impressively managed to participate in the majority of The Mavericks’ scheduled performances. However, he has recently announced a strategic reduction in tour dates as he prepares for a crucial liver operation set for December, taking the necessary precautions to ensure his body is ready for the procedure.
After wrapping up a leg of the tour, Malo shared a heartfelt photo with his family, expressing his joy in spending quality time with them and reminiscing about their “lovely time in Key Biscayne and Miami.”
“I’m doing great,” he wrote. “I’m feeling strong and healthy. No more chemo as my body prepares for this surgery in December. I will continue to train and get as strong as I can to help in the recovery process. Afterward, there will be a few more scans, and based on those, we may decide on additional rounds of chemo before reassessing the situation.”
“Good luck to all those going through this,” he added with heartfelt sincerity. “Keep fighting! We got this!”
Malo elaborated on the urgency of his situation, mentioning, “Doctors don’t want to risk losing the window to operate successfully on the liver, especially considering how well the first procedure went.” He expressed hope for a strong start to the new year, emphasizing the importance of rest and health. “All the Mavericks shows will continue, including finishing out our year at the iconic Ryman Auditorium. Thank you all for your loving support and your understanding of the fluid situation that we’ve been dealing with.”
The singer first disclosed his diagnosis to fans in a heartfelt Instagram video back in late June, capturing the attention and concern of many.
“In the last couple of years, while we’ve been out on the road, we have embarked on a health kick,” he reflected. “We’ve been treating ourselves a little better, taking care of ourselves more diligently, and really focusing on proper nutrition.”
“And that led to another appointment with a gastrointestinal specialist, which led to a CAT scan,” he explained. “And that proved to show two cancerous spots.”
