Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) can imagine that the contraceptive pill – as will soon be available in Italy – might soon also be available free of charge in Austria. A study is currently being carried out on this question, he said on Wednesday following the Council of Ministers. The results would be available by autumn at the latest. Unanswered questions regarding free contraception in this way primarily concern the costs and how to implement the free contraception in concrete terms, Rauch reported.
In Italy, women of all ages will be able to get the contraceptive pill free of charge in the future. This was decided by a committee of the Italian drug agency Aifa. The contraceptive pill is to be included in the list of medicines available free of charge. “Yes, I can imagine that,” said Austria’s Health Minister Rauch when asked following the government meeting. However, “the framework conditions would have to fit”.
