RATP: A worrying financial situation
Figures that speak for themselves
The Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP) unveiled its results for the first half of 2023 on Friday July 29, 2023, and they are far from reassuring. With a loss of 129 million euros in the first six months of 2023, the situation has changed drastically compared to the previous year, when a profit of 64 million euros was recorded.
This deficit is even higher than that recorded in the first half of 2020. When the first confinements hit France, the RATP had then only experienced a loss of 88 million euros.
Increased traffic, but…
Despite a 6% growth in passenger traffic compared to the first half of 2022, the level remains 15% lower than in 2019. The RATP attributes this drop to the growing popularity of teleworking and the strikes in March.
The reasons behind these poor results
Inflation: a burden for the RATP
Inflation had a major impact on RATP’s finances, with an additional charge of 203 million euros. This inflation has in particular necessitated an increase in the salaries of agents. Jean Castex, head of RATP, stressed the urgency of solving this problem, because it conditions the quality of service in the months to come.
Additional costs
In addition to inflation, the RATP had to face other costs. The strikes once morest the pension reform cost 10 million euros, while the riots of June 2023 caused losses of 6 to 7 million euros, in particular due to the destruction of equipment.
An uncertain future for the RATP
Challenges to overcome
RATP now faces several challenges. On the one hand, it must prepare for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. On the other hand, it must manage the effects of inflation and find solutions to improve its financial situation.
Because the latter is catastrophic. End of June 2023, leave this of the group climbed 10% over one year. It has now reached the sum of 6.1 billion euros.
Actions to take
Several measures are being studied to straighten the bar. Among them, the RATP is considering a possible increase in the Navigo pass or an increase in contributions from local authorities. A renegotiation of the contract with Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM) is also under consideration. But this solution will not raise the bar in the short term…
