A massive stellar explosion is expected to occur 3,000 light-years from Earth by next September, and it will be visible in the sky at night, providing an opportunity to study this rare cosmic phenomenon.
This will be at least the third time that humanity has witnessed the phenomenon called “nova,” which was first discovered by Irish astronomer John Birmingham in 1866, and then occurred again in 1946.
This phenomenon is recorded in a binary star system called “T Corona North” and belongs to the constellation North Corona, which is usually so faint that it is not visible with the naked eye.
But about every 80 years, exchanges between these two stars lead to a nuclear explosion that revives the glow.
The light resulting from the explosion travels through the universe and gives the impression for a few days that a bright new star, like the North Star, has appeared in the sky during the night for a few days, according to the US space agency (NASA).
Joachim Kreuter, a retired German astronomer who studied the nova, says that this “leads to a large explosion, and in a few seconds the temperature rises by 100 to 200 million degrees.” After a few days, the star returns to its normal brightness.
The explosion will be monitored by many instruments, including the James Webb Space Telescope.
