A rare and spectacular event captivated residents of New York and New Jersey on Tuesday morning. A meteor streaked through the Earth’s atmosphere, generating impressive sonic explosions. This phenomenon in broad daylight sparked curiosity and concern among residents.

Initial estimates suggested that the meteor, traveling at a dizzying 34,000 mph, flew past the Statue of Liberty before disintegrating over Manhattan. Reports of a fireball, rumblings and shaking helped trace this first path.

However, as new evidence came in, NASA adjusted the meteor’s modeled trajectory. According to the latest analysis, the meteor appeared over New York City and continued west toward New Jerseywith a speed of 61,200 km/h.

William Cooke, NASA’s meteorite environments program manager, said the meteor was likely less than a foot in diameter. Its disintegration into a fireball, caused by the intense heat generated by its speed, was an unusual sight for a observation daytime.

Footage of the fireball was shared by a Northford, Connecticut resident, showing a short white streak streaking across the blue sky. Fortunately, no fragments of the space rock reached the ground, and no damage or injury has not been reported.

While some saw the fireball, others simply heard a booming noise. Residents of Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens and northern New Jersey reported rumbling sounds accompanied by shaking. The high morning heat may have helped the sounds travel farther than usual.

However, William Cooke noted that this noise might have come from a completely different source, such as military activities taking place simultaneously in New Jersey.
