Rare phenomenon

Southern California is not highly threatened by tropical systems. In fact, this region with an arid climate has not seen such an event since 1997 with storm Nora. The US state might soon see action with Hilary, a tropical storm that is sailing off Mexico in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It would be the first tropical storm to make landfall this season.

Very active pools

The Pacific basin becomes quite active in August 2023. In fact, storms Greg and Fernanda are currently raging further west. Across Central America, Atlantic waters are beginning to stir with systems that might gain intensity and become named storms, notably off Africa and in the Gulf of Mexico.

major hurricane

As for Hilary, forecasters believe it might reach Category 3 hurricane status. It would then weaken until it makes landfall. It should hit Baja California, then continue its course north. The major cities of San Diego, Las Vegas and even Phoenix might receive record amounts of rain.
