According to reports from China’s CCTV and other Chinese media, people have photographed auroras in northern China. The keywords “Beijing Aurora” and “Mohe Aurora” were once on the hot searches. According to monitoring from the Space Weather Center of the China Meteorological Administration, geomagnetic storm activity may occur in China on December 1st and 2nd. Among them, a moderate to severe geomagnetic storm or even a geomagnetic storm may occur on December 1. The Meteorological Bureau also calls on pigeon players and aurora enthusiasts to always pay attention to space weather information in the next few days.

Zhu Jin, a researcher at the Beijing Planetarium and editor-in-chief of “Astronomy Enthusiasts” magazine, said on the evening of the 1st that the auroras occur because the sun’s charged particle flow (solar wind) enters the earth’s magnetic field. Due to the effect of the earth’s magnetic field, these high-energy particles turn to the polar regions, in the north and south of the earth. A luminous phenomenon caused by the collision of atoms in the high altitude and upper atmosphere near the poles.

Zhu Jin pointed out that although auroras are common in areas with high magnetic latitudes, if the geomagnetic storm is particularly strong, the range of aurora occurrence will expand, so it is indeed possible to see auroras in the Beijing area at 40° north latitude. In addition, geomagnetic storms will affect short-wave communications, etc., but they will not last too long and will not cause harm to the human body.
