This muscle car model is one of the rarest there is. A copy will soon be sold at auction.

Sports cars from major luxury brands are not the only models to be entitled to limited versions. In the United States, certain muscle cars also benefited from rarer lines, such as the Mercury Cyclone Spoiler. This car dates from 1971 and was only produced in 74 copies in total. At the time of its release, it was not only an extremely rare vehicle, but also one of the most powerful American cars of the time.

It indeed benefited from a power of 370 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. But, despite the age of these models, there are still Mercury Cyclone Spoilers in circulation. One of them will be the subject of an auction in Las Vegas, organized by Mecum Auctions. Its estimate is not communicated, but you can bet that it will not be negotiated at a low price.

An aggressive muscle car from a defunct American brand

The Cyclone Spoiler is the most aggressive creation of the Mercury brand during the muscle car era. It comes directly from the Cyclone line, but benefited from significant improvements and more elaborate finishes. However, it was not really a full-fledged model, but rather an optioned version of the standard Mercury Cyclone.

Which does not prevent her from being definitely more powerful than its original model. Under the hood, it hid a powerful Cobra Jet 429 V8 engine. Several technical improvements had also been installed, such as a carburetor, a « Drag Pack »suspensions designed for racing as well as front and rear spoilers.

An upcoming auction

The Mercury Cyclone Spoiler arrived on the market just before CO2 emissions are beginning to be subject to regulation. With the skyrocketing price of fuel, American muscle cars ended up failing because they were too gas-guzzling. But some of them are still popular with collectors.

Today, a copy can be purchased in a Mecum Auction auction. This 1971 model was fully restored. It is painted in one color Competition Orange – although it is more red than truly orange. At the time of its release, only seven shades were offered: Competition Yellow, Competition Blue, Pastel Blue, Competition Gold, Competition Green and Competition Orange. This is your opportunity to own one of the rarest muscle cars there is.
