Kayakers and snorkelers exploring the Southern California coast recently encountered an extremely rare oarfish, often referred to as a “doomsday fish” due to its ominous reputation as a harbinger of disasters. This sighting marks one of fewer than two dozen confirmed instances of oarfish in California over the past 120 years.

The oarfish, a strikingly large and peculiar creature, boasts a long, silvery, ribbon-like body. These fish can grow to lengths exceeding 30 feet, featuring large eyes and a cluster of foreboding red spines resembling a crown. Typically, oarfish are deep-sea dwellers, thriving in the unexplored depths of the ocean.

The oarfish spotted on August 10 measured 12 feet in length and was found near La Jolla Cove, unfortunately already deceased. These fish typically inhabit the deep ocean and are only seen near the surface when they are sick, dying, or disoriented.

Since 1901, only 20 oarfish have washed up on California shores. The discovery prompted a coordinated effort involving local lifeguards and marine scientists, who transported the fish to a NOAA facility for examination. Researchers plan to conduct a necropsy to ascertain the cause of death.

The remains of this rare fish will ultimately be displayed in the Scripps Marine Vertebrate Collection, one of the largest repositories of deep-sea fish specimens globally. Oarfish have garnered a reputation as ominous signs, often associated with earthquakes and other calamities. Notably, a group of oarfish washed ashore in Japan just before the catastrophic earthquake in 2011. Coincidentally, the California oarfish was discovered just two days before a 4.4 magnitude earthquake rattled the Los Angeles area.
