AFTER releasing Luruh with Isyana Sarasvati as the original soundtrack for the film Milly & Mamet (2018) and Niskala for Sandiwara Sastra – Mystery Nusantara (2023), now Hara, Rara Sekar’s solo project, is back with the original soundtrack for the sequel film Dua Garis Biru, Dua Hati Blue. Hara’s new song is entitled No Family is Perfect.

No Family is Perfect is a minimalist pop-ballad song inspired by classical-romantic, neo-classical and pop music genres dominated by Masakatsu Takagi’s piano compositions, who is one of Hara’s biggest musical inspirations as a musician.

The song consists of only lead vocals, piano and synth written, produced and performed all by Rara Sekar. The entire recording process was carried out in Wellington, New Zealand, the city where Rara Sekar now lives.

The process of working on the song itself was quite long.

“I was allowed to read one of the iterations of the Dua Hati Biru script by Mbak Gina (director of the film Dua Hati Biru_ around October 2023. Then, we had an online meeting with the production team to discuss the big themes and aesthetic direction of the song. One of the key words from Mbak “Gina that I noted was “the desire to remain present” in the context of the ups and downs of a family,” explained Rara Sekar.

Several months passed and Rara Sekar experienced a deadlock in writing the song.

One of the challenges was finding a connection between the narrative presented in the film script and Rara Sekar’s own personal experience in a family.

“After rereading the script five times, I found that there were several scenes and dialogues that were close to me. From these several scenes finally emerged the seeds of feelings that I wanted to explore in this song. Family issues are universal issues. But in this song, “I want to write a song that takes inspiration from the story of Bima and Dara in Dua Hati Biru, but is also close to a bigger story, the story of an Indonesian family which stems from my experiences and those of the people closest to me,” he said.

In the lyrics department, Rara Sekar admitted that he tried a new approach in this song. His solo project, Hara, is known for its simple lyrics, which are not too long and tend to be like mantras.

For No Family is Perfect, Rara Sekar tried to write more descriptive and specific in several parts, although she still chose diction that was close to everyday life.

Apart from that, the chorus melody in this song is also a mirror version of the song Growing Up, which was the original soundtrack for the previous film, Two Blue Lines.

“Maybe it’s like, No Family is Perfect like the older sister of the song Growing Up. Or it might be the adult version of Growing Up. Whatever the meaning of this song, I hope the song and the film can have space in the hearts of the listeners/viewers for a long time, ” said Rara Sekar.

No Family is Perfect has been released by Akar Wangi Records with digital distribution by REDROSE Records on March 14 2024. The film Dua Hati Biru will be shown in cinemas starting April 17 2024. (RO/Z-1)
