Rapper Fatman Scoop dies at 53 after collapsing on stage

American rapper Fatman Scoop, known for his songs “Be Faithful” and “It Takes Scoop”, died at the age of 53 on Sunday, August 31. He had collapsed on stage the day before, in Hamden, Connecticut.

He was rushed to hospital and could not be resuscitated. Paramedics performed CPR on him while he was still on stage, according to video of the incident obtained by celebrity news site TMZ.

This is DJ Birch Michael, also known as Pure Cold, who announced it on his social networks. “It is with a heavy heart that I announce the death of Isaac Freeman III, known professionally as Fatman Scoop,” he wrote.

“You taught me to be the man I am today. I love you Scoop. Thank you so much for everything you gave me,” he added in his message, accompanied by a photo of the rapper.

Hip-hop queen Missy Elliott also paid tribute to Fatman Scoop, writing on X that the artist’s “voice and energy” had “contributed to many songs that have made people happy and want to dance for over two decades.” “Your impact is HUGE and will NEVER be forgotten,” she added.

In 2018, Fatman Scoop briefly found itself at the heart of a controversy in Australia, when then Prime Minister Scott Morrison posted a video clip of the song “Be Faithful” on Twitter.

Conservative and evangelical Christian politician Scott Morrison deleted his post after receiving criticism over the rapper’s lyrics, which were considered as inappropriate to the decorum of the Australian Parliament. “It’s pretty obvious that this is not a song on my playlist,” he later quipped.

The controversy prompted a response from Fatman Scoop, who addressed the Prime Minister on Instagram, saying: “I am honoured to have my voice rocking the highest offices of the Australian government!”
