  • Elif deals with the pain of relationships and loss on her new album.

  • The 30-year-old talks about her worst experience for 20 minutes.

  • The Berliner also reveals why her ex-partners have to dress warmly.

Singer and rapper Elif prefers to wear black clothes and is known for her melancholic songs and her smoky voice. The German with Turkish descent addresses the pain of life in her latest songs, especially the end of a relationship.

For the 30-year-old, it is a kind of therapy when she can process her negative experiences in her texts. «It’s never been difficult for me to be open in my songs. I have the feeling that I should be even more honest, »she says in an interview with 20 minutes. In the meantime, she is even actively looking for negative feelings in her life, because this is the only way she can process them and develop further. The cliché of the “suffering artist” who can only be creative when she is in pain does not apply to Elif. “I can well imagine writing songs in a phase when I’m doing great. It would be exciting how these songs would sound.” You shouldn’t like the pain too much, otherwise you run the risk of losing yourself in it, she says. She made this experience during the writing process of the album.

Elif’s worst experience

The record is not only about the pain of separation, but also about death. The singer lost someone very close to her. That loss was the worst thing she’d ever felt. “It is not comparable to lovesickness. The feeling of missing is unpredictable and I can’t push it away. If it hits me, I’ll have to get through it until it’s gone.” What has helped her and what she advises anyone going through a difficult time is to let the feelings flow. “It’s okay to be sad and to miss someone. But you have to keep going and believe that everything has a reason, »said the musician.

«Anyone who dates me must be aware of the risk of ending up on a song»

In the breakup songs, Elif is sometimes right about hitting her ex-lover. “I can’t even describe what I think of you. Two middle fingers aren’t enough for that,” she sings on the song “When I Die”. Should Elif’s ex-partners be afraid of her? “You have to be careful with me,” she says, laughing. “Funnily enough, I rarely write about people I really like, but rather about people I don’t like. Through my music I can process my experiences and encounters with them.» For the musician, however, it is important that the privacy of the person is not violated, which is why she would never mention names on the songs. “But if you date me, you have to be aware of the risk of ending up on a song.”

What does Elif’s dream man look like?

Despite failed relationships, Elif still believes in love. But she has a clear attitude: “I don’t want to date a person for years, only to then separate. In the future you will either see me married or single, »said the 30-year-old. But she doesn’t put herself under any pressure to find the perfect partner. “I don’t think being single is bad. A partnership is not the focus of my life. At some point I’ll get to know someone – or not. Both are okay.” If she finds her Mr. Right, he can look forward to a lot of fine food. “I’m not so good at putting my affection into words, but show it by cooking with a lot of love for the person.” Elif doesn’t care what the perfect man has to look like. He simply “must not be a toxic person,” she says.

Elif’s new album “Finally it hurts again” was released on February 3rd.
