Rapid spread of cholera in Houthi-controlled areas – 2024-04-18 13:32:34

The United Nations is concerned about the outbreak of cholera in Yemen, particularly in areas under the control of the Houthi rebels.

As of October 2023, 11,000 cases and 75 deaths have been recorded in these areas, marking an alarming rise in disease incidence.

Alarming resurgence of cholera in Yemen

As of October 2023, there has been an “alarming resurgence of cholera throughout the country,” Edem Wassornou, the UN’s humanitarian chief, told the Security Council. UN, by Martin Griffiths. He emphasized that the last epidemic had broken out in 2019.

“The response in the areas controlled by the (internationally recognized) government, by government agencies and humanitarian organizations, has allowed the spread of the disease to be slowed and to ensure that appropriate treatments are available,” Ms Wasornou said. But since March, we see the epidemic spreading rapidly in the areas controlled by the Houthi“, he added.

As of April 7, there had been more than 11,000 suspected cases since October and 75 deaths, compared to 3,200 suspected cases in government-controlled areas, he said, insisting there was a need for a “rapid response.”

“But emergency stocks of essential materials are almost exhausted. And water, sanitation and hygiene systems must be strengthened urgently,” the official noted, calling on the international community to help.

The UN response plan to meet humanitarian needs in Yemen in 2024, costed at 2.7 billion euros, has only been financed to date by 10%. Aid to the population also needs progress in the effort to restore peace, the UN insists.

The country has enjoyed relative calm since a United Nations-brokered cease-fire came into effect in April 2022; although it has officially expired, it generally continues to be implemented by the warring parties.

But, according to iefimerida, due to the war between the Israeli army and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in Gaza Stripthe Houthis have been launching attacks in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden since mid-November against ships they say are linked to Israel, in a show of solidarity with the Palestinians.

And, although the military confrontation in the country “is limited compared to the period before April 2022, we are seeing a recent escalation of hostilities” on several fronts, according to UN special envoy for Yemen Hans Grudberg.

“While the conflicts in Yemen and the region are undoubtedly connected, I strongly believe that we owe it to the Yemeni people to guarantee that the resolution of the conflict will not be subordinated to the resolution of other problems,” he insisted. “We cannot risk peace in Yemen becoming a collateral damage,” he added, warning against the “catastrophic consequences” for the country and the region in the event of further escalation.
