Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said that the current authorities of Moldova are “rapidly drifting” towards Russophobia. In addition, in his opinion, they are slowly giving up the sovereignty of their country, drifting towards absorption by Romania.

“Obviously, the current leadership of Moldova is rapidly drifting towards the very well-known Russophobia, while for some reason they identify their desire for – well, as they think, European integration, they identify it with the flourishing of Russophobia. They believe that it should be an absolutely obligatory attribute of European integration – to hate Russia and any pro-Russian manifestations,” Dmitry Peskov said during a conference call. In his opinion, the actions of the authorities “do not correlate with the mood in society,” which is why protests are taking place in Moldova.

Dmitry Peskov also recalled the official renaming of the Moldovan language into Romanian. “We are seeing this, too, a drift towards absorption by Romania, we are seeing actions aimed at deliberately curtailing our own sovereignty, and so on and so forth,” the Kremlin spokesman said.

On April 17, the Moldovan authorities banned the head of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, from entering the country. On April 19, the Moldavian Foreign Ministry expelled a Russian diplomat and denied two more special permits to the airport because they violated the “rules of conduct established at the Chisinau airport” after the arrival of Mr. Minnikhanov.

On April 25, Ambassador of Moldova Lilian Darius was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry. He was handed a note declaring an employee of the Moldovan embassy persona non grata. Several more Moldovan officials were denied entry to Russia for “regular anti-Russian statements and Chisinau’s accession to the EU sanctions list,” but their names were not released. According to Kommersant’s information, Moldavian Interior Minister Anna Revenco and MPs from the ruling Action and Solidarity party Oaz Nantoi, Olesya Stamati and Lilian Carp were banned from entering the country.
