Exploded knee, dislocated ankle, multiple bruises, shock: this is the unexpected result of a normal end to the day for Raphaël, a computer scientist. “I am in a very good period. There is no shortage of work, training continues and contracts follow too. I was full until April but now I will have to review my schedule,” he comments from his hospital bed.
It was almost 7:30 p.m. this Tuesday evening when Carolo wanted to go home. Unfortunately, his vehicle failed him. Also possessing good knowledge of mechanics, Raphaël decides to leave his car in the Caserne Trésignies parking lot and take the metro located opposite the Charleroi court in the direction of Gilly. “It’s been years since I last took the metro so I went to ask the driver. He told me what to do and it was at 7:44 p.m. that I left for Gilly. At that time I noticed that an individual was looking at me with a threatening look. I decided to ignore it and ask further. Around 7:55 p.m., I arrived in Gilly and this man came towards me to give me a right hand. I was immediately stunned. He tried to hit me once more, but now it’s blurry. I don’t know how it happened, but I found myself on the subway tracks.”
Despite the blow, Raphaël calls for help but no one takes care of him. “I was lying on the rails, I mightn’t move my leg which was hurting a lot. I rolled to the side so as not to end up under the subway. I called for help but no one moved, there were people on the other platform but they completely ignored me. Their subway arrived and they just got on it. No longer able to stand on my feet, I crawled to get out of there. I called a friend who came to pick me up.”
Once taken care of by his friend, it’s a new disappointment for the computer scientist. “I was in a lot of pain and I was heading towards Marie Curie. I came across the man once more and called the police to let them know he was there right in front of me. He was heading in the direction of Ransart. I tried to tell the police, but they didn’t come. They just asked me several times by phone to go to the hospital. After staying for 10 minutes following the person, I was in really too much pain and I went to the emergency room, where I was taken care of.”

Result of the races, not only an “exploded” left knee, multiple bruises, but also the feeling of having been abandoned to his sad fate. On the one hand by the travelers who did not move, and on the other by the police despite an attacker who, according to Raphaël, was easily recognizable. “I wanted to file a complaint but I was asked to come to the police station. How to do? I’m in the hospital and I can’t walk. This Wednesday morning, my sister went to the police and there, shock! Someone was normally supposed to come and hear me… but they never came. For me, light must be shed on this hiccup.”
From a police source, we are informed that they are not aware of this particular case but possible responses are proposed. “If the victim called 101, it happens in Mons and the calls are dispatched to the places concerned. There may have been a communication problem. Although the author was spotted by his victim, it is essential that they go urgently to the hospital in order to receive adequate care. It seems in this case that such encouragement was indeed given. From the moment the attack was carried out in a place where camera surveillance is installed, the individual can be easily identified – and the chances increase if the victim has also clearly recognized their attacker. In the event that a person is not entirely satisfied with the outcome given to her business, she is entirely free to notify the Chief of Staff, who represents the administrative authority.”
It is now a long road to revalidation that now awaits Raphaël. First, he will have to rebuild his literally exploded knee, undergo numerous rehabilitation sessions but then, and above all, try to forget the traumatic experience of the metro.
