Ransomware: attacks increase globally, while Brazil records decline

2023 was the year of mega ransomware attacks around the world. This is what an analysis published by Check Point Software, which recorded a 33% increase compared to 2022 in the number of companies that suffered attempted attacks of this type. However, Brazil had a 2% reduction in the average number of weekly attacks suffered.

During the last year, the global average of cyber attacks was more than 60 thousand, which represents around 1,158 attacks per week. In other words, the scenario shows a continuous and worrying trend, as recent years have also shown this growth. Despite this, the reduction in Brazil represents 1,502 attacks per week on average.

Another important detail is that 2023 had a historic peak in terms of ransomware attacks. In total, 10% of organizations around the world were targets of this type of attack, which is higher than the 7% recorded during 2022 and is also the highest rate in recent years.

Changes by sector

The survey showed that the Education/Research sector is no longer the main target and recorded a 12% reduction. In its place was the Retail/Wholesale sector, which experienced a 22% increase in the number of attacks, while the Healthcare sector recorded a 3% growth. Factors that may have made the retail sector more attractive for attacks are:

  • Big Consumer Data
  • Highly Connected and Digitized Operations
  • Complex Supply Chain Networks
  • High Transaction Volumes
  • Seasonal Increase in Activity
  • Insufficient Cybersecurity Measures

Global attacks by region

When taking the region into account, the highlight is APAC, which was the leader in the average number of attacks per week, with 1,930 attacks per organization, an increase of 3% compared to 2022. Likewise, Africa also experienced a growth, with 12% more in the average number, with 1,900 weekly attacks per organization.

Meanwhile, the Americas experienced a considerable increase, rising from 5% to 9% in 2023.


Ways to prevent cyber attacks

In addition to using program tools such as Avast or Kaspersky, there are some simple recommendations that can help prevent attacks of this type. For example, having a robust data backup, training cyber awareness, keeping your computer up to date, and reinforcing user authentication with strong passwords are useful tips for this situation.
