WEST VIRGINIA (WCHS) — West Virginia is among the top states with the most fatal house fires, a new study has found.
The Mountain State is ranked No. 6 with 13.2 deaths per 1,000 fires, according to a study by Fire Cash Buyers. West Virginia tied Arkansas just outside the top five.
Real estate investors specializing in fire damage analyzed data from the U.S. Fire Administration to determine the rankings.
“Regardless of where your state lands in the rankings, it’s important to protect your home from fires,” a spokesperson for Fire Cash Buyers said in a news release. “Whether that is improving your detection system or ensuring that your insurance is up to date, all of it adds to your peace of mind.”
Alaska topped the list with 22.9 deaths per 1,000 fires, followed by Wyoming (18.5), Tennessee (17.7), Montana (14.2), South Dakota (13.7), Alabama (12.2), South Carolina (10.8) and Oklahoma (10.2).
Officials recommend installing smoke detectors in homes as a first line of defense once morest house fires.
If possible, installing fire doors – doors made with fire-resistant materials – can also help protect the interior of a home and its inhabitants. Fire insurance and electrical safety checks are also important in fire safety.
